Publicity: Information support contract to implement the Chemical Weapons Convention in the Russian Federation

Following the open tender held by the Ministry of Trade and Industry of the Russian Federation, the agency was awarded the Government Contract on Information Support of Implementation of the Convention to Ban Development, Production, Accumulation and Use of Chemical Weapons and its Destruction.

The contract amounts to RUR 51,094,800.00. The work must be completed until December 20, 2014.

The purpose of such three-year cooperation is to generate positive awareness of obligations to implement the Convention among the Russian, national and international public, government and local bodies and local public resident in the regions involved in storage and destruction of chemical weapons.

The Contractor developed the Program for information support to implement the Chemical Weapons Convention under the above contract.

On January 13, 1993, the Russian Federation was the first country to sign and in 1997 to ratify the Convention. The number of the Convention member states has currently gone up to 188.

The main obligation of the Convention imposed on all member states is banning production and use of chemical weapons and destruction of all chemical weapons stockpiles.

According to official data provided by the Ministry of Trade and Industry of the Russian Federation, Russia owned 39,966,586 tons of chemical weapons as of the ratification date. During 16 years of the Convention, Russia has destroyed 24,479,590 tons of weapons with warfare agents or 61.2% of the total Russia’s chemical arsenal.

Editorial Office of Rossiyskaya Gazeta, a federal state institution, was responsible for information support of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
